By Dr. David and Sister Mimine Wick
”But you are a chosen people, the King’s cohanim [priests], a holy nation, a people for God to possess! Why? In order for you to declare the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
1 Peter 2:9 CJB
Do you have any hobbies?
We do.
One thing that we’ve found about our hobbies is that our livelihood is not dependent upon them. We will still be able to eat if, for instance, we don’t categorize our collection of postage stamps. We don’t have any intention of selling our stamps anytime soon either. It’s probably a good thing because we don’t have a lot of knowledge about their values or how to convincingly sell them. While our collections often become a source of personal enjoyment and pride, they generally are not used as a business.
In contrast to the aforementioned scenario, much too often, the things we do for our pleasure could be a life-saving business in Haïti. In the past, Bishop Capré has reminded us of this. Take baking bread for instance. Those who bake bread here in America frequently do so for their families and friends alone. They don’t usually sell it. They don’t use it for their lone means of sustenance. In Haïti, by contrast, one who can bake bread could create a little business that would give them an income and sustain her family.
Do you have any skills like those that have been “rotting on the vine”?
Please teach them.
Another thing that we’ve come to learn about our hobbies is that while we enjoy doing them, they often fall into the category of not urgent. Because our livelihood doesn’t depend on them, we can leave our hobbies for the very last thing we do today…if ever.
Unfortunately, too many of us treat Kingdom Work the same way. We put the outreach for which we were destined on the back burner. We let it simmer a while, seemingly knowing that it’s something we can get to later…if ever.
As we realize that people’s eternal destinies are dependent on our efforts, they suddenly become less like a hobby and more like the efforts of our livelihood. We suddenly don’t mind getting up early, staying up late, traveling long distances or being interrupted. Saving souls suddenly becomes our passion.
Has Kingdom Work been a “hobby” to you?
